How Phangs is Breathing Life into the Nashville Pop Music Scene

When most people think of Nashville, they tend to think of country music and honky tonks. But the local Nashville natives know better. There is this colorful underground music scene that is flourishing, especially in the rock and pop worlds. While the population in Nashville is rising and musicians are fleeing LA, music creators have flocked to music city. More genres have started to show themselves in the daylight giving the country scene some edge. This is why Nashville is so special. It has become the melting pot of creativity that is overflowing with talent that you can find simply playing at “The 5 Spot” or “The Basement”. These intimate venues that have the best talent coming through and leaving some people speechless (usually in a good way). Nashville has been the birthplace of some incredibly inspiring musical projects, and it’s continuing to grow. Speaking of great talent, add Phangs to that list.

Phangs Transforms a Shoe Store into a Dreamy Pop Nightclub for “Happy Season” Album Release Party

Last year, I was able to attend Phangs “Get In My Arms” sold-out album release party. It is now a new year, which means new music, and Jake Germany has done it again. The show happened once again inside Rooted, a high-end shoe store that doubles as a club (who knew). This time, there was no special appearance of R.LUM.R (sad face), but pop diva, Brigetta Truitt, killed it on vocals singing “Dry Eyes”, a personal favorite from the album. Rooted was the perfect fit, symbolizing the underground pop music scene that Phangs is a key part of.

The ambiance was that of a smoky nightclub with neon lights and people of all ages singing along to every word. Fans were pushed up to the very front to get the perfect spot to watch Jake spill out his new tracks from “Happy Season”. You better believe that Phangs sold out the show once again. “Happy Season” encompasses mainly up-tempo “happy” tracks with the exception of “I Forgot You” leaning more on the somber side.

Performance Nostalgia

Phangs is great at giving you that dreamy retro sounding, dance-pop that has you dancing alone in your room until you suddenly realize that it’s 2am. Halfway through Jake’s set, I started having flashbacks to a scene in Sixteen Candles when Phangs started performing “Eyes off You”. There I was at a Phangs show in Nashville feeling like I had time traveled to a high school dance in an overcrowded gym auditorium with punch bowls, big hair, and chaperons. It’s special when live shows can take you to a different place and allow for moments of pure bliss when it’s just you and the music.

Jake does a great job of using his music as a tool for time travel and creating music that is so enjoyable and fun. After the show, Jake stayed to shake hands and take pictures with many bright-eyed, hungry fans. My craving for good, pop music was definitely satisfied. Excited to see what is in store for Phangs and the growing underground music scenes in Nashville.
