Bre Kennedy Launches “Strings Attached” That Has Our Hearts Longing for More Music

She’s at it again! Bre Kennedy is back with her second single, Strings Attached” from her newest EP titled “Jealous of the Birds”. After launching the feel-good pop single, “Slippin”, Bre not only acquired a rapid fan base and over 24,000 streams but also proved that this is only the beginning. Strategically slow releasing this album has allowed Bre’s fans to sit and digest her talent on every level. Also sparking interest from media outlets like Atwood and Popdust alongside gaining love from indie radio station, Lightning 100. “Strings Attached” shows Bre’s diversity in her artistry by moving from a single like “Slippin” to a heart-felt ballad. Taking your emotions on a poetic journey as music and art should. Now it’s time to start snipping away at those heart strings in the best way.

“Strings Attached” BTS (Behind The Song)

Every song has a story and every song has its secrets in the ways it has come to life. In our BTS section we uncover some of those secrets that took the song from nothing to the piece of art you hear today. “Strings Attached” was organically conjured up in Bre’s kitchen. “This wasn’t a planned write. I was rehearsing for a show in my kitchen, when Matt Koziol started playing this haunting guitar melody. Hearing that melody made my subconscious start singing what turned into “Strings Attached””, stated Bre. Once the writing process began, Bre and Matt had the entire song written in 20 minutes. It’s almost as if the song had already written itself inside of Bre’s heart, but joining the collaboration with Matt, it took on a new form in such an effortless way.

Bre said “I wrote “Strings Attached” forever ago. I still have the voice memo from the eve I wrote it. I never thought I’d actually put it out in the world.” When we asked Bre about the meaning behind the lyrics of the song she said, “This song is about living with the ghost of a broken relationship that you never totally cut off and it’s the most personal song I think I’ve ever written.” This song will flood your heart and mind with nostalgic thoughts of a time you had to remove someone from your life you didn’t want to.

Production Secrets

A few other secrets behind the song that is that if you’ll listen closely you can hear drummer, Jake Finch, use his breathes as sound effects. And if you hit up a live show, you’ll hear it in person as well. Kinda cool to hear it translate from record to live. When I first heard “Strings Attached” live I immediately thought ” What is Matt doing to his guitar?” It’s something called det-tuning and he’s doing it in real time. This means he has one hand on the tuner going up and down to get that dark, eery sound for the verse. Truly making you feel like you are inside of your own minds’ memories. Bre said ” I wanted the production on this song to sound like the way it feels when my memories go back to dark places. The relentless tension I felt when coming to terms with the fact that I couldn’t move on from this relationship with someone because I was still hanging on.”

Amber’s Thoughts

So I remember the first time I had ever heard this song. Bre was playing a show at The Analog at The Hutton Hotel. A beautiful venue to match the emotional journey I was about to embark on during this event. This was a night I got to experience with two other NU alumni, David Borne’ and Paul McDonald. A gift all in itself. Showing up by myself to support our NU family, little did I know I actually needed to be my self to experience this in such a way. Almost as if my soul would actually be baptized. Personally going through a heartbreak, I felt dumping myself in the music would be just the type of medicine I was looking for. Matt opened the song with the det-tuning, with every adjustment to those strings, my heart was being tugged on. I then nestled myself into a corner, knowing I would probably be in a pool of tears by the end. Might I add, I’m pretty notorious for showing up to shows and crying in my own glass of wine.

Bre’s raspy voice entered in with “I found your note inside a box, that I forgot, I ever had”. Bre delivered these lyrics with such conviction and authenticity, which had me in the EXACT same place she was probably in when writing this song. At that very moment, I was inside of the song. Again, I remind you that I’m fresh out of a gut wrenching heartbreak. She comes into the chorus “Sometimes you’re stuck with a thing like that, thought it was done but it still comes back. The only way that I can move on is to cut it in the middle where the strings attached.”

Melodic Medicine

Done! Those lyrics resonated in my soul by traveling through my veins, high-fiving my mind and making its way straight to my heart. The exact words I needed to hear in a time like that. My heart was hanging onto a situation that wasn’t right nor healthy for me. The only way I was going to be able to move on and become whole again was to “cut it in the middle where the strings attached”. Needless to say I stood in a full room, which felt like I was the only one there, and cried tears of relateability into my pinot noir. Little did I know, at the time, it was a musical baptism for the sadness my soul had endeared.

Music is a healer! I will forever preach that. The type of healing that Bre Kennedy’s “Strings Attached” gifted me at a time I needed desperate healing. That is something I’ll never forget. This song will always hold such a valued space in my heart due to its healing power and delivery. So this is me personally thanking, not only Bre and Matt for writing it, but to the entire team for their involvements. Just know I’m one of many hearts this song will heal. Music is created to meet someone exactly where they are at emotionally and provide some healing. It worked!
