BEHIND MIRROR NUMBER ONE…

Class 6 NU alum Samuel Lee has released a new EP, “Mirrors, Vol. 1” with two brand-spankin’ new songs. And all I can think is… Damn, boy! How long you gonna make us wait for Vol. 2?!

But I guess that’s the point.

Sam cleverly and strategically leaves his fans always wanting more.

I’ll let you in on a little secret though… I didn’t have to wait. Sam was kind enough to let Nashville Unsigned sneak a listen to the next two tracks on Vol. 2 and they do not disappoint.

MIRROR INTO THE SOUL

If it hadn’t been established before on any of his previous albums and EPs, it most certainly has now; soulful is truly Sam’s M.O.

Aptly titled “Mirrors”, Volume 1 gives us a glimpse into Sam’s soul; we see his desires, his pain, his ‘mea culpas’. And with such an emotive voice like Sam’s, our hearts feel every bit of it, too.

LET’S BREAK IT DOWN

The first track is “The Breakdown”, a somewhat hopeful tune about skipping town to try to break ground in a new place. I can’t help but think he might be singing about trying to ‘make it’ as a musician in Nashville.  When he sings in the chorus about “chasing a white whale [and] telling a tall tale”, I wonder if the “white whale” might be a lucrative record deal, or having thousands of fans at his shows, or making tons of money.  Or maybe he doesn’t care about any of that.  Maybe success for Sam is more intrinsic and existential.  Maybe he’s already ‘made it’.  (We’re inclined to believe the latter).  I also wonder what “tall tales” he might be telling to his family back home.  I guess we’ll never know for sure.

Or I could be totally wrong. Maybe he legit wants to chase a white whale.  That sounds cool, too, Sam.  We don’t judge.  Whatever floats your boat, Sam (cheesy pun intended).

DID YOU SAY MUSICIAN OR MAGICIAN?

All jokes aside, not only is Samuel Lee an incredible musician, but he might also be an incredible… magician(?). Somehow Sam has figured out a way to be in four places at the same time in his live video performance of “The Breakdown”. Catch him singing, playing guitar, bass, keys, and drums (!!!!) in this stripped down video.

WHEN IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE

Track two, “Said and Done”, is perhaps the emotionally heavier of the two. He sings of his desire, yet inability, to atone for his mistakes in a past relationship:

I wasn’t there for you…/ I’m just that kind of fool… / If I could turn into moonlight to help you sleep all night, I would. / If I could just lay to rest that old pain in your chest for good… / But it’s all said and done.

Apparently, even sensitive musicians in touch with their emotions can be seen as emotionally absent in relationships. Oh, the pain of irony!

MANY MIRRORS

If Samuel Lee’s “Mirrors, Vol. 1” is a figurative mirror into his soul, then we cannot wait to see more of Sam in Volumes 2, 3, and 4.

Yeah, that’s right. Four. Volumes.

I like to think it’s because Sam simply can’t stop looking (inward) at himself in “Mirrors”. Haha… just playin’ with you, Sam.  But he is a good-looking fella, ain’t he?  So who could really blame him anyway?  What a dreamBOAT (yup, another whale-watching pun… I’m done now).

AU REVOIR, AMERICA! BONJOUR, EUROPE!

Samuel Lee will be embarking on a European tour to promote “Mirrors, Vol. 1” with Olivia Rudeen in the early half of May, hitting places like Cannes, France; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Berlin, Germany; and Luxembourg. If you’re like us and don’t live in Europe, then be sure to catch him at a local gig or on…
