Coopertheband, an emerging indie folk rock band, just kicked off their North American tour, and we’re bringing you all the dirty little secrets. Coopertheband (all one word) is a bramily (band/friends/family) that stuck out like sore thumbs. Needless to say, it was an easy choice to feature them on Nashville Unsigned. Cooper Brown, Will Kwasigroh, Phoebe Scott, Matt Hammonds and Joseph Kyle make up this bramily. They all brought their influences and talents together to make one rubix cube of a band that is a boiling talented melting pot. Originating from different corners of Jackson, Tennessee, they pulled together the genres they connected with the most. With an array of diverse alternative and indie musical influences such as “Imagine Dragons”, “Switchfoot”, “Of Monsters and Men”, “Paramore”, and “Walk the Moon”, they focus on making music that paints a picture of real-life experiences.

The Five “Rebels” That Could

“Rebels” is definitely a standout track on their EP “Home”, so I had to get the low down. Phoebe Scott, the lead female vocalist, described it as a windows-down, fun song that encourages everyone to dance. As if we don’t need more of those! Music with meaning is another important aspect that the band touches on. It’s all about embracing your uniqueness and the qualities that make you stand out as a “Rebel”. To add to their uniqueness, Phoebe not only sings in their live shows but also doubles as a rhythm master. Phoebe was inspired by the successful girl band HAIM to add some drums to her role, which brings an entertaining and unique addition to their live show.

What stood out to me the most about Coopertheband was the chemistry and personality of the band. The beautiful blend of Phoebe Scott and Cooper Brown’s vocals and the rhythm-heavy driven sound captured my attention. Whether they were playing an uptempo track similar to “Rebels” or a slower ballad like “Home”, each member of the band complimented one another, adding to the band’s overall stage presence, and fun, goofy personality that makes them genuinely likeable.

Powerful Message of Positivity

Coopertheband wants to continue to spread messages of happiness and joy through their music. And they are as humble as they are talented. The message behind the band is that if they even have one person walking away from their show feeling loved or full of hope, that they did their job as artists. It’s easy to get lost in the business side of things, but Coopertheband stays true to that message. “The whole reason we play music is to put smiles on faces and make them laugh”, as Cooper put it. An important part of being a musician is being able to connect with your audience and getting to know them. Watching the band perform live, I felt a wave of joy fill the room and witnessed firsthand their profound impact on a crowd. “To be the next big thing is cool and all, but we are really here to make life better for someone else through our music”, Cooper humbly stated. If that doesn’t just make you love them even more, go listen to their music!
