Whissel & Nashville Unsigned

We at Nashville Unsigned love the way that these artists we meet create and innovate.  Music City houses the best surprises and hidden gems.  Some artists flourish with creativity and style.  Others are  blessed with raw talent, like they were born from the womb of an ancient Greek Muse.  This, my friends, is an introduction to someone who has both.pop, soul, indie, rock, unique, rockstar

With tones of classic jazz and elements of modern indie rock, Whissell brings a sense of noir to her music that captures a classically cool style.  Her low-key voice is smooth and reminiscent of artists like Amy Winehouse or Lana Del Ray, and her style can range from indie blues rock to atmospheric alt/indie to slowed down, piano-lead jazz.  It’s a pretty awesome combination of intelligent songwriting and rock ‘n roll spirit.

“Get Free”

I can only really say one thing when it comes to how I feel about  her latest “Get Free”… it’s stuck in my head forever,  I think.   It’s got this rhythm that really has a pulse to it, which is complimented well by her dark, atmospheric voice and rock ‘n roll vibes.    Seriously, though, go listen to it and tell us it doesn’t get stuck in your head.

Then there’s “Old Souls, Young Bodies”.  This song is probably her most atmospheric and implements more synth effects, while still keeping her edge.  Throughout the song however,  a haunting guitar strum echoes in that keeps the otherworldly melody.  It’s a bit of a slow jam, so get ready to get your Boys 2 Men sway on and let it take you there.

-“Mine” is more of the classic jazz sound, complete with piano, guitar, upright base and talented backing vocals.  It’s classic in many ways and brings out that old-school, true jazz sound.  This is the kind of song that compliments her outlaw rock and shows off her classic talent.  It’s how you know she’s the real deal.
