The Western Sons, Class 6 Alumni, launches their thought provoking music video for “Penelope”. If you were hiding under a rock when we launched the review on the song a few months back, then you can find it HERE.

Moving to Nashville less than a year ago, The Western Sons made quite the splash with their well polished sound and equally impressive music videos. It’s what we in the biz like to call “Eye and Ear Candy”. What is even more impressive, the audio and video production is entirely “in house”. Talk about a team of powerhouses!

SAY HELLO TO NASHVILLE’S NEW AGE BOY BAND

When we think boy bands, what comes to mind are some of the classics such as NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and dare we say One Direction. With the industry drastically changing, the definition of “boy band” is also changing. Housing many skill sets in music and business, TWS are one well oiled machine. Therefore, it was obvious Nashville Unsigned had to call shotgun on that band wagon.

“Penelope” MUSIC VIDEO HAS US QUESTIONING EVERYTHINGthe western sons nashville unsigned featured band

The Western Sons introduce the music video with a scene of a girlfriend and boyfriend (Tyler Cohenour, Lead Vocalist/guitarist) in a kitchen. Tyler states, “It’s not like I’m going to be gone forever, it’s just something I have to do”. The viewer is invited to join Tyler on a journey of exploration and self discovery. The story line cleverly splices scenes of his journey with vignettes of his girlfriend glumly preparing for an obviously important event. There’s an indication she’s got some sort of sadness lurking. Our wheels begin to turn…

Tyler jumps into the passenger seat of an old school yellow Volvo, telling us that he doesn’t plan to take this trip alone. (We might add; MAD PROPS to Nick *Beatnick Media and drummer* for snagging those EPIC drone shots, artistically recalling Tyler’s spiritual journey). Jumping from perspective to perspective like a grasshopper to plants, the storyline begins to expose itself. A pivotal moment of “things aren’t what they seem” takes hold when Garrett (Vocalist / Guitarist) gets out of the car and declares, “I don’t know why you keep coming here, man. How many times are you going to make this trip?”  Tyler replies “I’ve got to see her, man.” Garrett’s character adds, “You should’ve never left”. And the plot thickens!

Just before we reach the climax, Tyler appears to have adopted a ghost-like pasty skin tone. Hmmm… our interest has now officially spiked! Walking with intent through a cemetery, Tyler approaches his girlfriend at a grave site. Who could they be visiting? The actress walks toward Tyler with what is perceived as intense eye contact. Suddenly, in a hair raising instant, just before their anticipated interaction, she passes through him. The moment hits you like a ton of bricks colliding with your heart. OMG, HE’S DEAD! She’s visiting HIM at the gravesite!

Somewhere in the midst of his spiritual journey, Tyler has passed away. Details from the storyline begin to rush at the viewer, connecting dots to the arch of the story. We are caught spinning in the middle of a grade A, A-Ha moment! His girlfriend walks into the arms of another man, who has obviously supported her through her gut-wrenching sadness. Nick Benick states that “Tyler is in a sort of ghost limbo. He visits her everyday as she arrives at his grave, and although he’s happy she has moved on, he can’t let go”. The conclusion of the video portrays Garrett and Tyler, ghost road trip buddies, driving away to their final destination.

SHOUT OUT

We’d like to be the first to give much due credit to Nick Benick and his team at Beatnick Media for not only executing a high quality video but for an impressive, engaging screenplay. BeatNick Media are available for hire for both video and audio production. The Western Sons are not simply musically inclined, but perhaps one of the most business savvy bands we’ve encountered.
