It’s been a year since CAPPA has released any new music. But fortunately last week, the wait finally ended. And it was well worth it. CAPPA debuted her newest single, “Waste My Time”, a well-crafted, electro-dance pop confection that did anything but waste our time. Yeah, that’s right, I made a pun. And not a very good one. But it was just too easy.

HIGH PRAISE TO CAPPA
Having never listened to CAPPA (real name Carla Cappa) before, she immediately reminded me of Ellie Goulding, which I mean as a high compliment… ‘cause I love me some Ellie Goulding! Ms. Goulding’s music was once described by a reviewer as “sparkle pop with a folk heart and electronic edge”(1) and I think the same can be said of CAPPA’s music. So, imagine me squealing with girlish giddiness when I gave “Waste My Time” (and then a bunch of her other songs) my first spin. Go ahead… imagine it… I’ll give you a sec.

Now, contrary to what you’re thinking, it was NOT CAPPA’s physical resemblance (blonde hair, traffic-stopping good looks) that got me initially comparing her to Ms. Goulding. Rather, it was the texture of her voice. CAPPA’s vocal tone and timbre has a breathiness to it that is sultry, youthful, and, perhaps most importantly, natural. Unlike many singers, her breathiness does not sound forced. When she sings, you can’t help but want to inch closer and closer, as if she has a secret to tell. Effortlessly, her voice is sexy, but not overt. I wanna know her secret, y’all.

A NASHVILLE ORIGINAL
That being said, do not be mistaken: CAPPA is an original, writing or co-writing her own songs, as well as being influenced by everyone from Hall and Oates to Britney Spears to Passion Pit (for whom she once sang background vocals). Based in Nashville, a city known for its country music roots, CAPPA is somewhat unique. Although natives know that Music City is so much more than country music, CAPPA proves to outsiders that Nashville musicians can take on, and excel, in any genre, including electro-indie pop.

CATCHY AF
As for the song itself, “Waste My Time” (CONGO Records via Spinnin’) is catchy AF. It will instantly get stuck in your head. And trust us: you won’t mind it there. It’s so good, you’ll probably be groovin’ to it in the shower, in your car, at work, at the bar, and wherever else you might be. You might even find yourself singing it to someone you can’t seem to shake.

CAPPA says the song is about ultimately deciding to let go of an on-again, off-again relationship. With lyrics like, “You don’t take my breath like you used to / You wanna be how we used to / I don’t wanna work it out / I don’t wanna play the game / It’s all the same / Don’t even waste my time”, one can imagine CAPPA singing it to her [former] lover, making it unequivocally clear that she is not having any more of his/her flakiness! That’s right! DON’T WASTE MY TIME!!!

Oops, sorry… I got a little carried away there. I was thinking about an ex. My bad.

Anyway…

Not only is “Waste My Time” well-written and well-performed, it is very well-produced. The record is polished without feeling like an inauthentic ‘product’. It is familiar without feeling derivative. It is fresh and authentic. Unfortunately, sometimes pop songs become over-produced, using too much autotune, too much synth, too many tracks… just. too. much. But “Waste My Time” doesn’t feel like that at all. It is pop perfection. So, eat your heart out, Max Martin! CAPPA knows what she’s doing.

DON’T MAKE US WAIT ANOTHER YEAR!
Hopefully, we will not have to wait another year to hear the next CAPPA original. With pop music this good, it would really suck to have to WASTE ONE’S TIME waiting for the next single to be released. Sorry, but I had to leave you with a final pun… I’ll work on your forgiveness later. Just don’t make us wait, CAPPA, ok? Your fans are, no doubt, growing by the second and you don’t want to leave them hanging.
