Nashville’s music scene just keeps getting cooler, and Dela Kay’s “I Like You” is a perfect example of how creative our independent music industry has become.

Dela Kay’s style is vibrant, with an electro-pop basis.  Her songs have emotional range, both in substance andDela Kay "I Like You" and Nashville Unsigned lyrically.  This emotional journey is relayed well with her melodic choices.  She’s creative, and her music reflects that creativity with added energy.

Born and raised in Nashville, Dela Kay (Katie De La Torre) has had a love for music and songwriting since childhood.  As she grew up, this interest brought her to The Chicago College of Performing Arts at the Theatre Conservatory of Roosevelt University.  It’s a big name, I know, but it’s also a great place to learn theatre and performance arts.  She grew creatively in many ways here, but ultimately felt her calling was in songwriting.  Taking this experience in, Kay was ready to actualize her own creative career in music.

And hot damn, we are glad she did.

Upon returning home to Nashville, Kay synced up with Grammy winning singer, songwriter, and producer Femke Weidema.  It was with Weidema where her electro-pop style was harnessed and perfected.  The two began their process in the studio with a story and a vibe in mind, and built a colorful sound from that journey.  This creative journey later became the album “Empty” and her first single “I Like You”

“I Like You”

“I Like You” is an incredible mixture of sounds and energy.  Kay blends in soulful dark elements with powerful synth build-ups that bring a whole experience to the song.  Her voice is haunting at the beginning, then picks up to a crescendo when chorus breaks in.  It’s almost like an EDM song in the way the chorus builds up, somewhere between an epic dj set and a symphony.  This song is atmospheric, it’s energized, and it’s just beautiful.
